Six-Week Jurisight® Program
Beginning this Fall (2008 semester), Scott Rogers, M.S, J.D., will be conducting a 6-week Jurisight program for UM law students. Enrollment is limited to 15 1L students so that the program can remain interactive and attentive to the students’ individual and collective experiences. You can learn more about Scott by clicking here.
The group will meet for 90 minutes each week for six weeks during which time they will be introduced to the mindfulness-based principles and exercises that make up the primary Jurisight program.
Students who participate in the program can expect to develop greater insight into the workings of their mind and learn easy and accessible exercises to help them:
* Better prepare for law school classes and exams.
* Learn ways to calm an anxious or worried mind.
* Respond to the unexpected and undesirable from a place of
balance
* Participate in stimulating classroom discussions drawing on insight
and intellect.
* Establish more balanced and integrated states of mind during
challenging circumstances and events.
* Identify core values and interests that will help with later employment
searches.
Participants will leave each class with additional insights and exercises they can begin to incorporate into their busy days.
Since 2003, Scott Rogers has been teaching mindfulness-based practices to law students interested in learning ways to cultivate mindful awareness in order to facilitate greater clarity of mind, enhance well-being, and optimize performance. He has worked with law students at the University of Miami, the University of Florida, Barry University, and the University of San Francisco guest lecturing, conducting workshops, and in one-on-one meetings.
Teaching a version of the Jurisight program tailored for law students, the Institute for Mindfulness Studies offers law students the opportunity to learn exercises and techniques grounded in legal imagery and concepts, thereby enhancing their retention and comprehension. The Jurisight program was developed in recognition of busy schedules and the need to engage in problem solving in challenging environments. Based, as they are, on mindfulness practices, these techniques may also play a role in healthy shifts in brain states that can be helpful in maintaining and claiming greater productivity and well-being.
If you are a UM law student interested in learning more about the program, contact Iris Morera, your Student Services Coordinator at 305-284-4551 or e-mail her by clicking here.

What Law Professors and Law Students are Saying . . .
“With infectious enthusiasm, warmth, and great clarity, Scott communicates a series of perspectives, skills, and techniques—many of which are quite original—that students can use to bring mindful awareness into their professional and personal lives . . . . These should help them deal with the inevitable stresses and strains of life in the legal profession—as law students, lawyers, judges, mediators, and arbitrators.”
-- Professor Leonard L. Riskin
UF Levin College of Law
“In the classroom, Scott personifies mindfulness. He is fully present and truly listens. An entertaining and enlightening teacher, Scott uses unexpected twists and turns to break through our mental conditioning. He literally creates new neural pathways in his audience. The whole process is powerful and exciting. A single session left my students clamoring for more.”
-- Professor William Blatt
UM School of Law
"Advice given on first year law school exams usually is:’Don't freak out.’ Mindfulness and the Jurisight exercises teaches the 'how' in how not to freak out.”
-- Giselle Mammama
Former Law Student
“Scott’s original methods of waking us up to the present moment are easy to understand and a delight to experience. The simplicity and power of his techniques make them all the more appealing to busy lawyers.”
-- Melvin Rubin, Adjunct
Professor, UM School of Law
